Matchett was a medical student at Cleveland Medical College (Western Reserve College Medical Department). Cleveland Medical College was founded in 1844 by Jared P. Kirtland, one of America's leading naturalists, and John Delamater, Horace Ackley, and John Lang Cassels. The nucleus of the college was formed due to a split in 1843 in the Willoughby Medical College (1834-1847) of the Willoughby University of Lake Erie. The collection consists of a notebook which includes notes taken by Matchett during medical lectures given by Drs. Jared P.
